History/Backstory
Aennika was born to her witch mother Belinda. Her father is an unknown European man. As a baby, her mom cursed her so if she didn’t find her true love before her thirtieth birthday, she would turn into a cat.
She grew up with her mom and her half-sister Simone, whose father is also unknown. She went to normal human school throughout her childhood, and at the age of 14 (when Simone turned 18), the two sisters left their mother to live on their own in an abandoned house in the woods. (Not mentioned in the book, but they live in New Hampshire.)
During high school, Aennika joined somewhat of a cult that centered around the power gained from pain, in which members would hurt themselves as a show of their strength.
She went to college for Business and there she met her roommate and best friend, Maya. In her second year at university, she also met her (now ex) boyfriend Galen. Aennika admired him and sought his attention because of his confidence, and after they dated for several months, she revealed to him she was a witch. He knew the whole time, since he’s a witch as well.
Aennika and Galen dated for a few years after college, but she eventually caught on to how nefarious his goals were when he wanted her to “erase” certain humans. She broke up with him, and he attacked her with his corrupted black tourmaline shard, leaving her with scars on her throat and over her womb. (Maya healed her.)
Since then, Aennika and Simone have lived alone in the woods and barely interact with society. Aennika left her HR job in the city and began a small psychic business, though she and her sister mostly live off savings.
Two weeks before her thirtieth birthday, when she’s supposed to turn into a cat, two random men barge into her house, and that’s when the story begins :)
